Washington was freed at 9 years old after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, going on to become one of the most influential, yet controversial African Americans in history. Booker Taliaferro was born to a black slave woman, Jane in Virginia. Nothing else is known about his biological father expect for the fact that he was a white man. He began working as a young child as children of slaves became slaves by default. He wanted to study but it was illegal at that time for slaves to get educated. Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way. A 3-cent stamp commemorating ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery, was also issued in 1940. Booker T.
